Proper Breathing

How can proper breathing change your way of living?

Whether it be pain, anger, anxiety or stress, the body will respond in a similar way. You may experience rapid breathing, increased heart rate, tightened muscles and perspiration. This is the body’s reaction it has developed over time due to improper management of these emotions. When you begin to feel some of these negative emotions your body naturally starts pumping out adrenaline and cortisol. This reaction is linked to problems such as cardiovascular disease, insomnia, hypertension, indigestion, anxiety, depression and other mental illnesses.

Learning how to control one’s breathing is no simple task. But many problems we all face on a day-to-day basis are able to be combated by a solution right under our nose, literally.

It is known as 4-7-8 Breathing and here is how you do it:

Step 1: Breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds. Focus on expanding your stomach and NOT your chest.

Step 2: Hold that breath for 7 seconds.

Step 3: Exhale that breath out the mouth for 8 seconds.

You want to repeat this for a few minutes. It is one of the most efficient ways to oxygenate the body. While doing so focus on the sound of your breath coming in and leaving the body. Try and disregard all other things that pop into your head. This is not easy to do when starting, but with enough practice it can be life altering.
