Our Wellness Winner of the Month (October 2015)  is  Kathy Moreau shares her story of weight loss and a shift to a healthier lifestyle. In May 2011, Kathy noticed a photo of herself which prompted her to think about her lifestyle up to that point. Others noticed her issues as well, leading to a comment which prompted her to action. “…a comment I received from a person I admired, ‘I can’t believe you can bend over with that fat gut of yours.’” This provided the motivation Kathy needed to change her life. Kathy joined a local weight and exercise program, Weight Watchers.
The support and encouragement Kathy received allowed her to make sweeping changes across aspects of her life, and to stop thinking of herself in the past tense. A main change was a new way to look at healthy eating, “I use the words healthier lifestyle versus diet. My idea of a diet is a temporary way of eating to meet a specific goal that does not last. A healthier lifestyle is ongoing and allows a person to adjust and change his/her habits throughout their lifetime.”
Kathy says that many habits allow her to stay on track with her health. She uses a “toolbox” in order to stay on track, “My ‘toolbox’ consists of selecting whole foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables…weighing and measuring my portions, tracking food and activity, determination, persistence, a sense of humor, setting goals, [and] rewarding my success.”
Thanks to her lifestyle changes and routine, Kathy has lost weight, no matter how it is classified, “The numbers on the scale total 127 pound loss…I started out wearing a 3XL and today I wear a small. If you measure by the number of inches lost around my waist, it is the equivalent of a 24” tractor tire.” Kathy now tries to help and support others going through what she has accomplished. “I made a promise to myself if I succeeded in this transformation, I will pass along any knowledge, tips and support to other who may be struggling in their lifestyle journey. Each person’s journey is unique and personal.”
